PDMS Adhesion

Improving adhesive and material performance

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most common form of silicone.
  • PDMS is a preferred material in medical device manufacturing because of its stability and biocompatibility.
  • Unfortunately, PDMS exhibits very low surface energy, which makes coating and bonding the material difficult.
  • Surfx plasma treatment rapidly increases the surface energy of PDMS, enabling coating and bonding of your components.
  • Surfx plasma sources are water-cooled, allowing you to activate small PDMS components or thin PDMS membranes without thermal damage.

Improved Silicone Adhesive Performance

  • Plasma treatment improves bond performance or many materials when using RTV silicone adhesive
  • Plasma treating parts prior to bonding with silicone adhesive results in a cohesive failure mode
  • Untreated parts with fail at the adhesive interface
  • In some cases, a bond will fail to form entirely without plasma surface preparation

Choose the better bond

  • Surface preparation with Surfx’s atmospheric plasmas increase bond strength by 2 to 10x.
  • Prevent heat damage!
  • Different chemistries and recipes are required to activate different materials.
  • Ultimate impact:
    1. Guesswork is taken out of device assembly,
    2. Devices are stronger, tougher and do not fail during use.
